White Sand Beach Resort Fakarava

Overview

Try to visualize paradise. In your mind’s eye, it will look just like Fakarava. This beautiful fragile crown of coral gently floats on the Pacific Ocean. With the deep blue of the open ocean on the one side and a huge lagoon on the other, where the sparkling waters change from emerald green to aquamarine, Fakarava is warm, welcoming, peaceful and secluded.

The island is recognized and protected by UNESCO as a MAB Biosphere Reserve. In this unique environment on the far end of the world, you will find White Sand Beach Resort. With over 280 yards (250 m) of beautiful beach and the lagoon right at your doorstep, it is hard to imagine a more idyllic place.

White Sand Beach Resort offers you a complete escape with traditional Tahitian bungalow accommodation and a fantastic restaurant and bar. Expect exceptional amenities and attractive rates.

Fakarava only has around 700 inhabitants, who mostly live in the main village Rotoava. A visit to Fakarava means discovering a culture where people live in perfect harmony with their precious environment. The shape of Fakarava is nearly rectangular, 60 km (37 miles) long and 21 km (13 miles) wide. It is the second largest atoll and the ancient capital of the Tuamotus. The island is has a wide and deep lagoon that has two passes. The main pass to enter the lagoon, located in its northeastern end, is known as Passe Garuae and it is the largest pass in French Polynesia; the southern pass is called Tumakohua.

The pass of Garuae especially is a paradise for underwater enthusiasts. It is an excellent location to experience the open sea in a drift dive, marine life is abundant and the coral formations are truly exceptional. Fakarava’s rich ecosystem is home to rare birds, plants and crustaceans, while the magnificent dive sites are virtually undiscovered. Life along these quiet shores is equally unique with quaint villages, old coral churches, and friendly local people.

Activities

Diving
Fakarava is an excellent diving destination, for beginners as well as the most practiced divers. It is gaining reputation rapidly but diving here is still regarded by many as ‘virgin’. The northern pass is stunning and absolutely huge. With a depth of 10 meters, this is one of the most imposing passes in French Polynesia.

Species most commonly encountered include Napoleon wrasse, seapikes, damselfish, bigeyes, marbled groupers, manta rays, and sharks. The sharks in these waters are not aggressive. Some of the established dive sites around Fakarava include the Tumakohua Pass (Pass dive 40-140 feet), Garuae Pass (Pass dive 40-140 feet) and Sharks Hole, a lagoon five of around 60 feet.

The TOPdive scuba diving center is based on-site at White Sand Beach Resort. Mathias and his team will cater for all your diving requirements and show you the magnificent reefs that are abundant both in and around the lagoon of Fakarava.

Boat Excursions
Life on Fakarava centers around, under and on the water. An excursion by boat to one of the gorgeous motu’s is highly recommended while staying at White Sand Beach Resort. It is peaceful and romantic, and time really does not matter here. It is almost possible to touch the soul of the Tuamotus on these little motus. This it is one of Polynesia’s most remote regions. Whether you go diving or snorkeling in the lagoon or rather stay dry, a boat trip to one of these lovely little islands with their stunning pink sandy beaches is the best way in the world to relax. It is a unique and unforgettable experience.

We can organize a half day boat excursion for you to islets in the Theatea area and the North Pass. Full day boat excursions to the islet of Topikite or to the South pass of Fakarava are other options, with a barbeque picnic and snorkeling included. Snorkels, fins and masks are usually provided.
Boat excursions are always subject to lagoon and weather conditions but they are available all year around.

Pearl Farm Visit
Fakarava’s immense lagoon has several black pearl farms and if you are staying at White Sand Beach Resort, we are happy to organize a visit to a working pearl farm for you. Just talk to our friendly staff at reception and they will be happy to help you with your request.

During your visit, you will learn all about the fascinating but extremely time consuming cultivation process of the precious Tahitian black pearl – often referred to as “a girls’ second best friend.” And if you like, you can make that exceptional and unique purchase.
