The South Pacific humpback whales migrate from their feeding grounds in the Antarctic to the warm northern islands of Tonga each year to mate and give birth. They stay in the area for about 15 weeks (early July – late October) before their 8,000km swim back to the southern oceans of Antarctica for the summer months. During their short time in Vava’u, we have the privilege of entering their warm ocean environment among the 50 or so, islands of the Vava’u group. Each day is different, some days we swim with mothers and their calves or an enormous pregnant female, other days we enter into the deep sapphire blue water to hear their beautiful haunting song and it’s great fun observe with great excitement, the boisterous behavior of a ‘rowdy’ group – a group of male humpbacks with testosterone pumping swirling around the boat.
