The Maria Island Walk – 4 Day Maria Island Walk

Day 1:
A Maria Island Walk vehicle will pick you up from your hotel for your transfer to The Maria Island Walk office located at 4 Patrick Street, North Hobart, the departure point of your tour. At 8.00am meet the rest of your group, collect your backpacks and undertake a briefing before departing on your four day Maria Island Walk tour. At 8.45am drive just over one hour to the fishing village of Orford River where you will board the Maria Island boat for a 40 minute private catamaran crossing through the waters of Mercury Passage to the remote southern end of Maria Island. Enjoy lunch overlooking the crystal azure waters of Shoal Bay before taking a walk to Casuarina Beach camp. There is time for an afternoon stroll through the tall eucalypt forest to visit a penguin colony at Haunted Bay. This evening after a candlelit dinner, stroll along the beach with a glass of wine delighting in the day you have had. Walking distance today is 8 kilometres. Overnight at Casuarina Beach camp (no shower facilities available however a private washing cabin with bowl of warm water is provided). (L, D)
Day 2: Start your journey along five beautiful beaches. Watch for dolphins in the surf and wedgetail and sea eagles soaring overhead, explore world heritage convict era cells and a rare Tasmanian Aborigine ochre site at Bloodstone Point as you walk to White Gums camp. Enjoy lunch at a secluded place along the way. Arrive at White Gums camp and enjoy a refreshing swim before retiring for another evening of gourmet dining. This is prime habitat for catching a glimpse of the endangered 40 spotted Pardalote bird. Walking distance today is 13 kilometres on flat, hard sand beaches and well worn trails. Overnight at White Gums camp (no shower facilities available however a private washing cabin with bowl of warm water is provided). (B, L, D)
Day 3: Several options are available today. Choose to travel through magnificent “cloud forest” to the breathtaking 709 metre summit of Mt Maria. Alternatively, choose a gentler option and head inland to the heart of the island through the ancient forests full of bird life to visit Hopgrounds Beach and the Painted Cliffs before arriving at the world heritage penal colony of Darlington. From Darlington you may wish to climb the summit of Bishop and Clerk. Enjoy lunch along the way. Tonight stay in historic colonial Bernacchi House in Darlington. Walking distance today is 9-17 kilometres. Overnight accommodation at Bernacchi House. (B, L, D)
Day 4: The final day begins with walking around the northern tip of Maria Island. The walk takes you through a variety of spectacular woodlands and forests with rare endemic birds, wallabies and wombats on show. Continue to the dramatic sea cliffs of Fossil Bay and then head down to the remarkable fossils at Fossil Cliffs. Arriving back at Darlington, enjoy lunch before boarding the boat back to the mainland and Hobart taking with you incredible memories and stories of an amazing four days spent in a very special place. Walking distance today is 4 kilometres. Tour concludes in Hobart at approximately 5.00pm, at which time hotel drop offs will commence. (B, L)
